VOLUNTEERS looking after hedgehogs in the Prestatyn area received a boost from Castle Green Homes.

 

The homebuilder awarded £500 to Hedgehog Help Prestatyn from its Mission Green initiative, linked to Sŵn y Môr on Gronant Road.

 

Hedgehog Help Prestatyn is run by Tracy Pierce, a registered carer with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

 

Tracy explained: “I’ve been running Hedgehog Help Prestatyn from my own home for 10 years, taking in wild injured, sick, orphaned hedgehogs for treatment, rehabilitation and release. Very sadly hedgehogs are on the red list for possible extinction and a big part of what I do is give talks to all ages, to highlight the difficulties they face and what we can do to help.

 

“We cover a huge area of approximately 50-plus miles and have rescued 100s of hedgehogs over the last 10 years. I couldn’t do this without my volunteers, both at the rescue and as transporters and fundraisers. Treatments and care are very costly, including medications, specialist foods, cleaning, housing, electricity, transport and release set up. The funding from Castle Green Homes has been used to purchase hedgehog houses, made by people at the local Men’s Sheds projects, books to teach children about hedgehogs and also towards our ongoing running costs.”

 

Mission Green Prestatyn is a voluntary scheme through which Castle Green has supported 11 good causes.

 

Castle Green Homes sales director Sian Pitt explained: “The idea behind Mission Green is to support those who are working hard to look after the environment or residents’ wellbeing in the Prestatyn area. Hedgehog Help Prestatyn does a fantastic job in looking after wildlife locally and we were pleased to offer a grant towards their running costs.

 

“As a responsible homebuilder, we’re committed to creating communities where nature thrives. We’ve taken steps to include hedgehog highways in our developments, ensuring these little creatures can move safely between gardens in search of food and shelter. We’ve also produced leaflets full of tips to help homeowners and their families look after wildlife in their own gardens and in the wider community.”

 

The other local projects to receive funding though the initiative were Big Pool Wood volunteers, Cosy Craft Club, Denbighshire Play Rangers, Fins Swim School, Friends of Coronation Gardens, Helping Homeless North Wales, Little Explorers and Friends, Ysgol Clawdd Offa, Prestatyn in Bloom, and Ysgol Gronant.

 

The Mission Green funding is in addition to the community investment Castle Green will make under a Section 106 agreement signed during the planning process.
